house in garden ground

Existing Site

This project involves the design of a new house in the garden ground of a large stone villa in the Forthill Conservation Area. The house has a particularly large garden which was proving difficult to manage but provides an excellent south facing plot for a house. The clients brief was to provide a new dwelling for them within the existing gardens in a way that would be sympathetic to the existing house, maximise views over the river, be efficient to run and easy to maintain. The existing plot should be split in a way that would clearly define and separate the gardens and entrances of the two houses.

Design Proposals

Following discussion and some exploration of the brief and the possiblities for the site with the client, it was agreed that there is much to commend the traditional Scottish Villa of the late 19th century. We were also keen to create a house that would respect the surrounding group of houses and the wider conservation area.

The finished design is a reinterpretation of a traditional Scottish villa which respects the scale and massing of its neighbours yet is contemporary in its construction and detailing. Certain features of the neighbouring properties such as the bay windows and the gables have been referenced within the design without reverting to pastiche. The house has generous windows facing south to make maximum use of sunlight and the stunning views across Broughty Ferry and the Tay Estuary.
