restaurant:dunkeld st, aberfeldy
Existing Building
Our client had owned and leased a fast food 'take-away' on Dunkeld Street in Aberfeldy for a number of years and approached us with a view of creating a restaurant on the site. The 'take-away' took up a double shop front and there is a flat above and various dilapidated buildings and a substantial garden to the rear.
Design Proposals
Our client wanted to retain a separate 'take-away' and restaurant if possible so the frontage was re-designed with the 'take-away' to the left hand side and the entrance to the restaurant formed on the right hand side.
The client wanted to create as many covers as possible so a contemporary single storey timber frame, timber clad extension has been added to the rear to accommodate the kitchens, toilets, bar and extra seating. An existing two room, two storey cottage to the rear is to be retained with the floor taken out to create a double height space in the middle of the building with light coming in through the roof. Parking for twelve cars is also accommodated to the rear and at the very back of the restaurant; a sliding glass door provides access to a small outdoor terrace area.
The simple glass frontage and discreet signage of the new restaurant is designed to respect the uniform shop fronts adjacent. The restaurant interior is defined by three different spaces; the entrance area off the street will be an intimate space with stong visual links to the street, the double height space within the retained cottage in the middle of the plan will be naturally lit in daytime hours and provide something of a surprise as it is not easily read from outside and the extension to the rear will provide a sophisticated contemporary dining space. The project is due for completion mid 2009.
